A Weekend of Study with Martin Maldonado and Maurizio Ghella at The Philadelphia Argentine Tango SchoolSep 3rd, 2012 | By Steven Weisz | Category: Dance Education
The Philadelphia Argentine Tango School is offering “A World of Sensations,” a weekend-long tango immersion with Buenos Aires’ premiere male-male partnership, Martin Maldonado and Maurizio Ghella. This two-day intensive program of tango workshops, performances, and social dancing will take place September 22-23, 2012 at the Philadelphia Argentine Tango School and the First Unitarian Church.
World-renowned Argentine tango dancers, Martin Maldonado and Maurizio Ghella are equally in demand for their mastery of teaching and their soulful, elegant performances. Each has a long background in dance (Maurizio studied ballet, contemporary and hip hop; Martin studied folklore and ballet), and together they have created a tango that is at once intelligent and provocative, moving and heartfelt, arising from their tireless investigation of the body, movement, and sensation.
Saturday’s milonga or tango social dance will be held at the Philadelphia Argentine Tango School, located at 2030 Frankford Avenue, Philadelphia, PA. Featuring an all-levels tango class, music by famed NYC DJ Adam Hoopengardner, and performances by Martin and Maurizio, this event is open to all tango dancers and aspiring dancers from Philadelphia and beyond. Admission ($15) covers the 8:30-9:30pm open class, 9:30-3am milonga, 11:30pm performances, and light refreshments.
All workshops are geared toward intermediate-advanced level tango dancers, and will be held at the First Unitarian Church at 2125 Chestnut St., Philadelphia, PA. Registration options include a complete weekend pass, day-long and individual workshop passes. Pre-registration is required.
The Philadelphia Argentine Tango School was founded in 2008 to offer top-notch instruction in Argentine tango to beginners through professional dancers in Philadelphia. In addition to group and private lessons, the Philadelphia Argentine Tango School offers a weekly práctica, monthly milongas and occasional larger events. We organized the 1st and 2nd Philadelphia International Tango Festivals (2010 and 2012), and have hosted two major electronic tango bands, Otros Aires and Tanghetto, as well as workshops with world-renowned tango instructors. In addition to teaching in Philadelphia, our instructors regularly travel to teach and perform worldwide. In the past two years, Philadelphia Argentine Tango School instructors have taught in England, France, Spain, Poland, Brazil, Argentina, Australia, Canada, and throughout the US. In October 2009, School co-founder Meredith Klein established a permanent studio in the Fishtown neighborhood of Philadelphia. The School is enthusiastically collaborating with other local arts and development organizations to help build a robust Frankford Ave Arts Corridor.
