Arts in the economic stimulus!
Mar 14th, 2009 | By Dance Journal Staff | Category: Action & AdvocacyLast month, Congress passed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, with the promise of creating new jobs and supporting crucial projects to keep our country moving forward.
The Coburn Amendment, which sought to eliminate any arts and cultural funding from the Act, was taken out of the final piece of legislation – restoring critical funding for the National Endowment of the Arts grants.
The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 will bring $50 million to the National Endowment of the Arts. Forty percent of these funds will be granted to state and regional arts organizations, and sixty percent of these funds will be awarded to nonprofit organizations that meet the criteria established by this program. More importantly, this funding will help to create new programs and retain positions at arts and cultural institutions in the Greater Philadelphia area and beyond.
